Rest periods affect more than recovery between sets. They influence performance, fatigue, session density, and how much training can actually be completed in the time available.
A rest-period prescription cannot be separated from total volume, setup time, exercise structure, and the trainee’s schedule. The goal is not simply to prescribe the ideal rest period on paper. It is to build a session the trainee can execute well in reality.
Rest periods are part of the program.
Not because there is one perfect amount of rest that magically maximizes every adaptation, but because rest periods help determine what can actually be completed inside the training session.
This is one of the biggest things I see both trainees and trainers overlook.
They pay attention to sets, reps, load, tempo, and exercise selection, but rest periods become a vague suggestion.
The athlete finishes a set, checks their phone, walks around, talks, sets up slowly, and somehow the planned 120 second rest becomes 240 seconds.
It does not feel like a major issue in the moment.
But it adds up quickly.
If a trainee takes an extra 30 seconds of unaccounted rest on every set across a 20-set training session, that is 10 minutes gone.
That is not a small detail if the entire session needs to be completed in 45 minutes.
This becomes even more important when unilateral work is involved.
If a trainee takes unaccounted for rest between sides, then rests again after both sides are completed, the actual density of the session can change dramatically.
What looked like a simple assistance series on paper can suddenly eat up a large portion of the session.
This is why rest periods need to be protected.
Rest Periods Are Part of the Prescription
Rest periods are not just there to make the program look complete.
They influence performance, fatigue, session density, and total training time.
Longer rest periods can be useful when the goal is to maintain high output, especially during heavier strength work.
Shorter rest periods can be useful when the goal is to increase density or manage session time.
The problem is not long rest periods.
The problem is unplanned rest periods.
There is a big difference between prescribing four minutes of rest because the trainee needs it to perform a high-quality strength set and accidentally taking four minutes because nobody was paying attention.
One is programming.
The other is negligence.
The Real-World Time Cost of Rest Periods
A lot of rest-period recommendations are written as if the trainee has unlimited time.
Many people are coming into the gym with busy schedules. They may need to be warmed up, trained, and out the door in 45 minutes.
In that context, every wasted minute adds up.
This does not mean every session needs to be rushed.
It means the session needs to be organized.
If a program includes a lot of sets for the primary exercises, long rest periods, unilateral assistance work, and remedial exercises, the coach needs to understand how long that session will actually take.
Setup Time Counts Too
Rest periods are not the only time between sets that needs to be considered.
Setup time needs to be accounted for as well.
I used to have a client who would legitimately take about two minutes to set up before every set of a primary exercise.
This was not him being lazy.
It was part of how he prepared to perform well.
He needed time to approach the bar, get set, brace, create tension, and feel ready to execute.
That had to be accounted for.
If I prescribed a high-volume A Series, such as 8 sets of 4 reps with 4 minutes of rest between sets, that session would have taken far too long.
On paper, that may have been a normal prescription for the goal.
In practice, it would have taken close to 50 minutes just to complete the primary work once setup time was included.
That would leave no time for assistance work, remedial work, or anything else the session needed.
So the prescription had to change.
I would reduce the total A Series volume, reduce the prescribed rest period knowing that in reality they would still be adequately prepared because of the extended setup duration, or choose a structure that better matched the reality of how that trainee performed.
This is coaching.
The goal should always be to write a program the trainee can execute well inside the time they actually have.
Sometimes the Trainee Is Telling You Something
There is another important layer here.
Some clients, especially more advanced trainees, instinctively know how much time they need to perform at their best.
They may not be able to explain it in technical terms, but their behavior gives you information.
If a trainee consistently takes longer before heavy sets, that may be a sign they need more psychological and physiological preparation to produce high output.
If they rush and performance drops, the rest period may be too short.
You, as the coach, should pay attention.
Rest periods should be observed, adjusted, and managed like every other training variable.
Volume, Rest, and Session Duration Have to Fit Together
Rest periods cannot be prescribed independently of training volume.
More sets create more rest periods.
Longer rest periods increase total session duration.
Unilateral exercises can add additional transitions and rest between sides.
Long setup routines can add time that never appears in the written prescription.
All of these factors affect how much training can realistically fit into the session.
If the trainee has 45 minutes available, the coach cannot prescribe volume and rest as though they have 75.
If longer rest periods are required to preserve performance, something else in the session may need to change.
If more volume is the priority, the session structure and rest periods need to make that volume achievable inside the available timeframe.
The variables have to fit together.
Protect the Session
Protecting rest times means respecting the structure of the session.
If the goal is high-quality strength work, take the rest needed to perform.
If the athlete has 45 minutes to train, write the session for 45 minutes, not for the imaginary version of the athlete who has no job, no family, no schedule, and apparently lives inside the squat rack.
The small leaks matter.
Thirty seconds here, one minute there, a long setup before every set, unplanned rest between sides, and suddenly the session no longer matches the plan.
Rest periods are not arbitrary.
They are part of the program.
Program them. Adjust them. Protect them.
